Using the Keyword Planner is an excellent way to discover new search terms, understand their search volume, and estimate how much they might cost to target.
Here is how you can use Keyword Planner to find new keywords:
1. Navigate to Keyword Planner
- Sign in to your Google Ads account.
- Click the Tools icon (represented by the wrench/spanner) in the left navigation panel.
- Click the Planning drop-down in the section menu.
- Select Keyword Planner.
2. Search for New Keywords
Once you are on the Keyword Planner home page, follow these steps to find ideas:
- Click on Discover new keywords.
- Choose one of the two starting methods:
- Start with keywords: Enter words or phrases closely related to your products or services (e.g., “organic coffee beans” or “running shoes”). You can enter multiple keywords separated by commas. You can also input your website’s domain so Google can filter out terms unrelated to your business.
- Start with a website: Enter your website URL (or a competitor’s URL), and Google will analyze the page content to suggest relevant search terms.
- Click Get results.
3. Refine and Filter Your Results
Google will display a list of suggested keyword ideas along with key metrics like Average Monthly Searches and Top of Page Bids. You can customize this list to find the best options:
- Adjust Targeting: At the top of the page, you can change the target Location, Language, and Search Network (e.g., Google or Google and search partners) to match your target audience.
- Filter Results: Click Add filter to narrow down your terms by specific criteria, such as filtering for keywords with low competition or specific bid ranges.
- Refine Keywords: Use the Refine keywords side panel on the right to easily include or exclude terms based on brand names, categories, or specific attributes (such as colors or styles).
4. Add Keywords to Your Plan
- Check the box next to any keyword ideas you want to use.
- Select your preferred match type (such as Broad match, Phrase match, or Exact match) from the drop-down.
- Click Add keywords to save them to your plan. You can later view forecasts on how these keywords are expected to perform based on your budget.
